Beginner Sewing Classes

Learning to Sew – The Basics: Students in this class will learn basic use of the sewing machine, including how to load a bobbin, thread the machine, sew a straight line, pivot a corner and zig zag. Next, students will learn basic pattern use to sew a simple garment. This project covers use of fusibles, seam finishes, seam allowances, use of seam gauges and much more. Students who have their own machines are encouraged to bring them and learn on their own machine. Students without machines, will use studio machines and instructor will assist the student in determining what type of machine may best suit their needs, based on his/her sewing goals. Max # of students is 4. (Please review “Policies” page prior to registration).

Intermediate Sewing Classes

Garment Construction– This class is for students who know how to use a sewing machine, and can construct a garment from a two or 3 piece pattern. From there, we pick up and begin working on more complex patterns, and approaching more complex sewing tasks. Students will learn to make darts, and insert zippers, blind hem, and use facing and interfacing in a garment.  Time allowing, there will be a demonstration of the serger and it’s uses for seam treatments and finishing. Continuing students should come to class with project pattern already approved by instructor and materials washed and when appropriate, laid out and pinned or cut out.  New students need to have a project approved by instructor and should come to class with materials washed and ready for class (washable fabrics). Home Decor – This class is for students who know how to use a sewing machine and have the ability to sew straight lines, load their own bobbins, pivot corners, and make a header/casing (as in the drawstring bag). Students will have the opportunity to request projects that they would like to produce, but no patterns are used for window treatments. Students learn to produce curtains using the window measurements. Window treatments will include “tab top”, simple lined curtains, and several drawback types. Pillow treatments can be covered, including inserting zippers in pillows and making pillows with decorative trim. We do not do roman shades in the Home Decor class.

Other possible projects include table runners, placemats and dinner napkins. Requests from students are always welcome. Please ask about a project before signing up for class, if you want to do a specific project and the instructor will assess your skillset in relation to the requested project.
