Summer Sewing fun!

July 17, 2013

The summer sewing classes and kids camps are going great! I’m including a few shots, so you can see some of the methods taught in the studio.

Here is an intermediate students work. The bodice is a little complex, with crazy pleats, a lining, underlining and that crazy elastic gathered top band.DSC_0001 DSC_0002 DSC_0003 DSC_0004 DSC_0005

This dress turned out beautifully. I think we both agreed however, that canvas was a little heavy for this beautiful summer dress. The striped skirt and pleated bodice are a great combination on that student’s great figure.

Here is how I teach students to sew straight lines. This red and white striped fabric is a staple at Hobby Lobby, so we can always find it to practice sewing straight lines.DSC_0019 DSC_0011

In addition, they have all kinds of cool containers for use as sewing baskets and fabric storage containers. Here is one that a student particularly liked. DSC_0013

In addition to learning to sew straight lines, students need to learn to pivot turns and sometimes they have an especially hard time with curves. Here are how I help them conquer those challenges: DSC_0030 DSC_0033 DSC_0034 DSC_0027When they are sewing on the paper, we remove the thread from the needle. The perforations, themselves are enough evidence of success or…… “not”.

I’ve got to get to class. This week, I’m teaching from 9 am – noon, 2-5 pm and then 6-8 pm. Makes for an exhausted sewing instructor at the end of the day, but very happy students 🙂
