Adult classes

Current Schedule – 2016 (registration closes the 20th of the month prior to your class)

Beginning Classes –

Intro to the building blocks of quilt making. Students will learn a variety of beginning quilt blocks and will assemble those blocks into a quilt top. The final evening of class, students will be taught to create the quilt sandwich that goes to the quilter for final quilting, or to go onto the quilt frame.  If students do their homework, the will have a quilt, ready to be quilted at the end of this class.

Fabric requirements will be sent to registered students along with the supplies list.

Intro to Sewing
Learn to use a sewing machine! Whether you are interested in learning to sew so you can make clothing, or home decor, or other items, this is the first step. In this class, students will learn sewing machine basics. Learn to wind your bobbin, thread your machine, sew a straight line, pivot corners, and much more. Then, learn to read patterns to construct your desired projects. In a 4-week class students can expect to create a basic skirt. Don’t worry if you aren’t interested in sewing garments, we still need to choose a pattern-based project, so you can learn to use patterns. After an initial “beginners class” you will be prepared to move on to using more complex patterns, or taking an intermediate class.  The first night of class, you will need to come in with 1.5 yards of pre-washed fabric from the “calico, prints and solids” section at Hobby Lobby and a supplies packet for my class. The supplies lists will be emailed to you once you have registered for class.  Your supplies for class must be purchased at this Hobby Lobby.  (please note that you need to come to the first night of class with your fabric already washed and dried using the methods that you will use when putting your finished product in your laundry weekly).

Ms. Hawkins I am really excited to learn to sew but will not have enough free time in my schedule until after the holidays will you be offering classes at the beginning of next year? Also, do you teach basics of how to create your own patterns? I would really appreciate your feedback.

I am interested in taking a beginner sewing class in the evening. I saw that the class is full, but how do I get registered for the next class?

It’s fine to add a beginner to the Thurs. evening class. I don’t currently have anyone else registered for that class, and we can have a mixed class, or it can become a beginner class. The wed. class is supposed to be full, but the registrations aren’t in. If you go ahead and register, I can put you on a waiting list, or accept your application for the Feb. Tues. evening class. All are very good options. Hope to see you in class.

I have now also added a Monday evening class for beginners. It meets from 6:45-9:15.

I heard there’s a beginner’s class here in Richmond for girls ages 10+ (that they have to be at least 10) so I googled…could it be that you have such a class? We live in Midlothian so my daughter gets home from school at 3:50 pm. If you do not have availability, would you be able to refer me to classes elsewhere? I’m sewing ignorant but my daughter has such desire. Thanks!

I do offer a class for that age, and have one opening on Tues. afternoons. The class, however, begins at 3:30. Perhaps if you pick her up at school, and bring her to class she can make it very near the beginning of each class. If not, I’m always willing to build classes to suit small groups of 3-4 students. If you can find 2or 3 other students wanting to take a class at the time you are wanting, we can offer a class then;0) Hope this helps. Let’s see how we can help your daughter learn to sew.

    Hello Ms. Hankins,

I am very interested in taking your beginning sewing class in the evening. I can do Monday or Wednesday, whichever one has an opening. How do I get registered for class?

It will be nice to have you in class. Just download the registration form from the box on the blog page, fill it out and deliver it this week.
I don’t think it will arrive in time if you mail it. It does need to be accompanied by a check. This information should also come to you in your personal inbox.

    Hi Cherri,

I’m very much interested in taking a beginners class this fall. Do you have a schedule available for evening classes during the months of October & November?

    Thank you!

      Hi Paulyn,
I will continue to have Monday evening classes throughout 2010, and Thurs. evening classes as long as there are enough students to justify 2 evenings of sewing classes.
Thank you for your interest in the classes here at my studio.

Hi Miss Cherri, I am really interested in taking a sewing class but, I work 3-11 shift and all your classes are during the evening time. Do you offer any classes in the morning from 11am -2pm

    • rivercityweaves permalink
      September 7, 2010 9:52 pm

      Hi Janiece,
I do offer private lessons during the day, and if you know of just 2 other people interested in taking a daytime class, I’ll teach it for 3-4 people.
If you and I can agree on a day and time, I’ll even advertise for a few weeks, and see if we can get others to join you in that time slot.
Private lessons are $40/hr/person, and you will accomplish the same, or more in 4 lessons, as folks do in 4 classes.
      Hope this helps.

I just stumbled on your web page today and this looks exactly like what I’ve been looking for.
I was wondering if you knew your schedule of classes for the 2011 year. I’m looking to start the beginning of January. I was considering the private lessons. I don’t have a machine and have zero experience. But I am a fast learner (hopefully that applies to sewing as well)
    How much are private lessons?

I will continue to hold classes in Jan and Feb, as well as early March, but in March, I will close the studio for a year!
I am an avid cyclist, and will set out on a tour of the United States, including AK and will be on my bicycle for 365 days.
My recommendation, is to take the classes as early as you can begin. Private lessons are currently $40/hr.
      Thanks for your interest.

Can I register for Tuesday evenings: 6:30 – 9:00 Class dates for November 11/9, 16, 30 and 12/7? Also, I’d like to get my own sewing machine. Any brand /model you’d recommend? I have never done sewing before and my first project after I learn how to sew will be trying to sew some simple window treatments 🙂

    Thank you,

Just download the application form from the website, and drop it by the studio with your payment, some time this week.
I don’t accept registrations the night of class, so would need to get you registered this week.
Today, I’m teaching elsewhere until about 5, but will be in the studio from 5-6:30.
You can come another day, or just slide the registration, and check under the studio door.
The studio is at 3800 Stillman Pkwy, R,VA 23233

My mother and I would be interested in attending a wet felting workshop, if you have one already planned. If not, we would be interested in having a private lesson to learn this technique. If we needed to do private lessons, how long would it take to fully understand the wet felting process?

    Also, how would we register?

      Thanks for your interest.
My classes are held at my studio in the far west end of Richmond, va.
The address is 3800 Stillman Pkwy.
IT’s across the street from Costen floors, if you know where that is.
The classes are posted on Craigslist,, and should be updated on the blog.
      Feb. classes are as follows:
      Monday evenings are beginning sewing
      Tues evenings are intermediate sewing
      Thurs. evenings are beginning sewing

MArch classes will be very similar. On March 25, my studio will close for a year, so I’m doing my best to get everyone ‘in’ before leave. If the schedule doesn’t jibe with your own, the private lessons are equally effective as learning/teaching tools.

I will be holding classes on Monday evening, Tues. evening, and maybe Thursday evening. The beginners class will be Monday evenings, beginning 2/28.
Prior to that time, though, I’m available for private lessons, which are equally, if not more helpful. If you can’t make the Monday evenings, or want to begin sooner, let me know.
